With the festival just weeks away, a lively atmosphere permeates the workshops of these skilled craftsmen in Jayamahal, Cox Town, Maruti Seva Nagar, and other areas of the city. The trend of blending traditional techniques with modern designs is evident, as techniques passed down through generations are utilized alongside contemporary styles to create stunning works of art. The detailed craftsmanship, vivid colors, and symbolic imagery all contribute to bringing Durga Puja to life. Artisan Chandrashekhar Pal mentioned, “Theme-based idols and modern designs are gaining popularity in the city, some incorporating clothing into the clay designs. The sizes of idols range from 6 to 15 feet tall, with a rising demand for larger creations.” Although it can be disheartening when our efforts are not fully recognized, it is rewarding to know that our artistry is utilized for religious purposes, providing both income for ourselves and our teams. One experienced artisan in Bengaluru, who has been crafting idols for Durga Puja for 35 years, observed the growing demand for idols, attributing it to an increasing number of Bengalis moving to the city. While acknowledging the similarities in the celebrations of Dussehra in Karnataka, he emphasized that the most significant difference lies in the Bengali celebration of Durga Puja, commencing on Panchami.
